North Carolina Minor League Baseball teams
North Carolina minor league baseball teams such as the Greensboro Grasshoppers play during the spring and summer months after spring training has ended and the rosters are filled with swift and eager baseball players. Newly signed teams of draftees and rookies come to play Class A baseball in a minor league with a long tradition in North Carolina of playing sensational minorleague baseball.
The South Atlantic League is a minor league divided into a Northern and Southern division. Teams in the Northern Division include the Greensboro Grasshoppers, Delmarva Shorebirds, Hagerstown Suns, Hickory Crawdads, Lake County Captains, Lakewood Blue Claws, Lexington Legends, and the West Virginia Power. Minor league baseball teams in the Southern Division include the Asheville Tourists, August Green Jackets,Charleston River Dogs, Columbus Catfish, Greenville Drive, Kannapolis Intimidators, Rome Braves, and the Savannah Sand Gnats. North Carolina is home to a quarter of the teams with four out of the sixteen baseball teams based in the tar-heel state.
Prior to 1980, the South Atlantic League was called the Western Carolinas League. At one point, the WCL was composed of baseball teams exclusively from the Piedmont and Blue Ridge sections of western North Carolina. Continuing this long tradition of North Carolina baseball in the Piedmont, the Grasshoppers play a full season beginning in April of each year.
