(Greensboro, NC) Quality pitching and timely hitting pushed the Grasshoppers past South Atlantic foe West Virginia Tuesday evening at New Bridge Bank Park.
Greensboro right-hander Kyle Kaminska scattered three runs on five hits in five innings of work, as the Hoppers downed the Power 8-3. Kaminska, a second-year Grasshopper, struck out six en route to his second win of the season, evening up the three game series one game apiece.
The Power struck first, scoring one run on two hits in the top half of the first inning. But Greensboro centerfielder Kevin Mattison answered with a leadoff homerun in the bottom half of the inning. Daniel Pertusati followed with a single of his own, and later scored on a Paul Gran double.
Ben Lasater connected with his league-leading fifth homerun in the third, as the Grasshoppers rallied for five unanswered runs while Kaminska tossed three consecutive scoreless innings.
The Power would add two runs in the fifth, but Kaminska bounced back to finish the frame, and log at least five complete innings in his last three starts.
Relievers Bryan Evans and Pete Andrelczyk combined for four innings of scoreless relief, as the Grasshoppers coasted to their first Northern Division victory.
The Hoppers are back in action Wednesday morning for a school day match-up, taking on West Virginia. First pitch is slated for 10:45 a.m.
