HAGERSTOWN, MD - A three run second inning proved to be too much for the Hoppers Thursday night, as they fell to the Hagerstown Suns for the second straight game.
Hagerstown First basemen Robby Jacobsen extended is league leading, 16-game hit streak by doubling to lead off the third inning. Designated hitter Stephen Englund would later plate the sizzling Jacobsen with his two-out RBI single.
The next hitter, Sun's centerfielder Chris Curran, blasted a homerun over the right field wall to jump out to an early three run lead.
Hagerstown starter Terrence Engles (2-1) picked up his second straight win, allowing one run on six hits through six innings of work. The Sun's bullpen provided another solid night of relief, working three innings to cap off Engle's strong start.
Kevin Mattison and Paul Gran, who collected two hits apiece, led the Grasshoppers offensively. Mattison homered for the fourth time in the last 10 games, but the Hoppers were unable to rally, dropping another close one, 4-2.
Brandon Turner continued to swing the bat well, going 1-3 last night and 9 for his last 25. Since being reactivated from the disabled list, Turner has boasted the team' second highest batting average, falling just short of South Atlantic League leader Ben Lasater.
With last night's loss, the Hoppers fall to 15-12, a half game back of the top spot in the Northern Division. The Grasshoppers matchup with Hagerstown tonight in the finale of their four game series, and visit the division leading Delmarva Shorebirds tomorrow evening.
