Grasshoppers Take One of Three Friday Against Captains

May 29, 2009

EASTLAKE, OH - The Grasshoppers and Captains played three times Friday due to inclement weather in previous days.  The day began with a continuation of Thursday's rain out before the two teams met for a double-header to wrap up the series.

The Captains scored four runs yesterday before rain forced the cancellation.  The Captains held their lead after play resumed while tacking on an additional run to down the Hoppers 5-1.

Captains starter David Roberts (2-1) picked up the win, as Lake County pitchers held the Grasshoppers' bats at-bay, allowing just three hits.  Grasshopper's starter Johnny Dorn (6-2) lost his first decision in six starts despite allowing just one earned run.

The Grasshoppers responded with a game two win behind the right arm of starter Tom Koehler (3-2).

Koehler hurled six strong innings, scattering six hits without giving up a run.  His six innings of work matched a season high and earned him his third win in his last four starts.

With his seven strikeouts last night, Koehler has now fanned at least five in each of his last four starts while holding opposing hitters to a .234 average.

Outfielder Justin Bass paced the Hoppers at the plate, going 3-3 to extend his five-game hit streak and collect his second multi-hit performance of the series.  Bass and Jake Smolinski each blasted home runs to knock off the Captains 7-0.

But Bass wouldn't stop there however, continuing to destroy opposing pitching by going 2-3 in the back half of the double header.

Bass led all Hoppers' hitters in the 3-2 loss, connecting on his fourth home run of the series and eighth of the season.  Bass has now hit safely in his last six games including two consecutive multi-hit games.  He is hitting .800 on his current streak with four home runs in his last five contests.

Center fielder Kevin Mattison also went deep for the Hoppers, but a bases clearing triple in the 2nd inning edged the Captains past the Grasshoppers in the series conclusion.

Eddie Burns (1-1) picked up his first professional win, logging 2 1/3 innings while striking out four.  Closer Steve Smith notched his seventh save of the season to kill any chance of a late game rally.

The Hoppers (25-23) have fallen to third in the Northern Division standings, slipping to three and a half games behind the league leading Lakewood BlueClaws.

The Grasshoppers look to bridge the standings gap tonight, as they host the BlueClaws in a four game set to begin a six-game home stand.  Tonight's first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
