Hoppers Fall in Pitching Duel

June 9, 2009

Charleston, W.Va. - Grasshopper's ace Johnny Dorn took on West Virginia righty Gabriel Alvarado in an old-fashioned pitching duel Tuesday evening.

Alvarado and the Power outlasted the Hoppers in the duel, striking for two runs in the third frame to lead them past the Hoppers 2-1.

Dorn (6-4) pitched well in the contest, matching his season high in innings pitched with seven.  He scattered five hits over his seven innings of work, and surrendered just two runs while fanning four.  Both Dorn's runs proved costly however, as the Power's two-run cushion in the third was enough to tag Dorn for his third straight loss.

Dorn began the troublesome third frame with a leadoff walk to Adenson Chourio.  Chourio swiped his 11th bag of the season when he took second off Dorn and catcher Kyle Skipworth.  A passed ball allowed Chourio to advance to third before Quincy Latimore lined a single to centerfield for the RBI.

West Virginia tabbed their final run a few pitches later when Chase d'Arnaud dropped a line drive double down the right field line.  The RBI double gave the Power a two run lead, and called on the pitching staff to hold the Hoppers and preserve the win in the low scoring contest.

The Hoppers began to mount a comeback in the 7th inning, opening the inning with three consecutive base hits.  Daniel Pertusati, Justin Jacobs, and Emilio Ontiveros each reached for the Hoppers, but the offense manufactured just one run off on an RBI groundout.

The one run lead was enough for the West Virginia bullpen, as Power manager called on Ryan Kelly for the six-out save.  Kelley worked scoreless eighth and ninth innings to close out the Hoppers and pick up his third save of the year.

Opposing pitchers iced the Hoppers' bats for the second time in as many games, as the Hoppers have failed to score more than three runs in their last two contests.  The Grasshoppers have connected on just 12 hits in the past two games after tallying 16 total hits two nights ago against the Crawdads.

Although the Hoppers notched more hits than the Power, they squandered several scoring opportunities by leaving eight men on base.  Only one hitter in the Hoppers' lineup produced multiple hits, as Ontiveros went 2-4 to pace the team offensively.

The Hoppers' (29-28) and Power continue their series tomorrow night when the Grasshoppers send righty Graham Johnson (2-1) to the mound to face fellow right-hander Duke Welker (0-5).  A win in the finale would help the Hoppers keep pace with Kannapolis in the Northern Division standings, a key factor in the upcoming series with the Intimidators.

Johnson and Welker square off at Appalachian Power Park Wednesday night, first pitch scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
